Moose Spirit (Zapotec)

spirit · Mexico · Mesoamerica

Not independently attested as a moose spirit of Zapotec folklore. Moose are not native to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and no Zapotec source records a cliff- or wilderness-dwelling moose spirit. Genuine Zapotec animal and nature powers belong to the tonas, personal companion-spirits, and to deities like Cocijo the rain god and Pitao Cozobi, god of maize. The moose is a misplaced northern animal.
