Mosquito Nature-Spirit ( Maori)
In Māori tradition the mosquito and sandfly (namu) were created from the powdery spores (puanga) of Haumia-tiketike, the atua of uncultivated food, to bite and humble humans. Their stinging presence teaches humility, a lesson often linked to the deeds of Māui. The record's 'protector of rainforests' framing is unsupported; the attested material is aetiological.
