Mugumo
Mugumo (Mũgumo) is the Kikuyu name for Ficus thonningii, the strangler fig, revered as vessel of Ngai (God) and ancestors. Cutting one invites curse; elders sacrifice roasted lamb beneath branches to call rain. The 2020 presidential decree protecting the Waiyaki Way fig tree exemplifies living sacred status. Central to oath-taking and circumcision rites. The tree itself is the numinous presence.
