ancestor-spirit · Democratic Republic of the Congo · Central Africa

Mwana Pwo is the female ancestor mask character of the Chokwe peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola. A popular and frequent figure in entertainment masquerades, mwana pwo is always worn by a male dancer. The mask represents a female ancestor and symbolizes fecundity and the prominent role of women in Chokwe society. Although idealized, its features suggest the individuality of a portrait, and it often carries elements of beauty such as scarification and elaborate hairstyles.
