Naga (Burmese)
The naga is the great serpent being of Myanmar, entwined with Buddhism and royal symbolism: a multi-headed, dragon-like serpent that guards rivers, lakes, and treasures, may appear as friend or foe to humans, and is venerated at shrines and along the Ayeyarwady. Serpent-king tales link the naga to rainfall, fertility, and the protection of the faith; images of it crown pagodas and palace gates.
