Nalusa Chito

spirit · United States · North America

Nalusa Chito, also called Impa Shilup, 'the soul eater,' is the great black shadow being of Choctaw belief. It was said to creep inside a person who let evil thoughts or despair take hold, devouring the soul from within. Many in the Choctaw Nation avoid speaking its name for fear of drawing it, a practice recorded in the tribe's own traditions and in studies of Choctaw mythology.
