Nanabozho is the trickster-transformer and culture hero of the Ojibwe people, central to their creation stories and oral traditions. As the son of Epingishmook (the West Wind) and a human mother, he was born with great spiritual power and raised by his grandmother Nokomis. He created the world anew after a great flood, formed Turtle Island from mud brought up by the muskrat, gave the people corn and fire, taught them hunting and fishing, and established the Midewiwin society. He is a shapeshifter who can appear as a man or a great hare (Mishaabooz)
