Nang Wanla (Mermaid of Phra Aphai Mani)
The mermaid of the Thai epic Phra Aphai Mani by Sunthorn Phu (1822-1844) rescues Prince Aphai Mani from the sea ogress Nang Phisuea Samut, then bears his son Sudsakorn, born on the isle of Ko Kaeo Phitsadan. Unnamed when first met, she is later called Chantawadee and becomes a queen. The tale is taught in Thai schools and memorialized in statues on Ko Samet.
