Nat

spirit · Myanmar · Southeast Asia

Nats are the spirits of Burmese folk religion, a pantheon of 37 official 'great nats' and countless local spirits. Most are souls of people who died violent or unjust deaths, gaining supernatural power, and they inhabit hills, trees, rivers, and death sites. Worshipped with offerings alongside Buddhism, they can bless or afflict; nat mediums (nat kadaw) channel them in trance.
