Nattramnen (night raven) is the tortured ghost of an unbaptized child or a suicide victim, forced to wander the night as a spectral raven or crow. The creature was extensively documented by the 19th-century folklorist Gunnar Olof Hyltén-Cavallius in Småland. Nattramnen flies only from west to east, never lower than an ox's yoke, and its wings make a creaking sound like an ungreased wagon wheel. It is doomed to fly ceaselessly until it reaches the grave of Christ — an impossible journey. Anyone who sees or hears a Nattramn is said to receive a warning of death or misfortune.
