Nawang Wulan is a heavenly nymph (bidadari) from Javanese folklore who descended to earth to bathe in a forest lake with her six sisters. The mortal Jaka Tarub stole her magical shawl, preventing her return to heaven. She married Jaka Tarub and bore him a daughter. Nawang Wulan possessed a miraculous ability: she could cook a single grain of rice into a full meal for the family. She instructed Jaka Tarub never to lift the cooking pot's lid while she cooked.
