Nidelv-Nøkken

water-spirit · Norway · Nordic

Nidelv-Nøkken (the Nidelva Nixie) is a localized version of the nøkk (water spirit) that specifically inhabits the Nidelva river in Trondheim. The Nidelva flows through the heart of Trondheim, from Selbusjøen to the Trondheimsfjord, passing under several bridges and through the city center. According to Trondheim folklore, the Nidelv-Nøkken lives in the deep pool beneath Bakke bru (Bakke Bridge), where the water is darkest and deepest. The spirit takes the form of a beautiful horse that emerges from the river at night — the classic bäckahästen (brook horse) tradition — luring people to ride it
