Nokomis, 'my grandmother' in Anishinaabemowin, is the wise grandmother of Nanabush in Ojibwe tradition, the elder who raises the culture hero and counsels him through his adventures. Her name and role appear across the Anishinaabe nations of the Great Lakes, and she is a figure of kindness, humor, and steady guidance. Longfellow popularized her as Hiawatha's grandmother.
