Noqoilpi (Great Gambler)

Noqoilpi is a powerful and malevolent figure in Navajo tradition who challenged all who came to him to gambling contests. He lived at the base of Ch'óol'į́'í (Great Spruce Mountain or El Capitan) and won the possessions, freedom, and even entire nations through his gambling prowess. He grew so powerful that the Holy People intervened, sending a challenger who, aided by divine help, finally beat Noqoilpi at the moccasin game and other contests.
