Northern Lights
The northern lights, called wâwâhtêwak, 'those that go in circles,' in Cree, are seen as spirits dancing across the winter sky. Some nations say they are the ghosts of the departed holding a great dance, and the Cree phrase cîpayak kâ-nîmihitocik, 'the ghosts are dancing,' names the display directly. Whistling at the lights is forbidden, for it offends the dancers and draws them down.
