Nu-u
The name nu-u has no independent attestation, but it corresponds most closely to the water babies of Great Basin tradition, known to the Southern Paiute as pit-u-u or paúngaa'a. These small, crying beings guard springs and lakes and aid shamans, but are dangerous to those who approach their waters. Their weeping is a warning, and children are taught to keep away from deep water where they live.
