Nuba (Sara Creator God)

deity · Chad · Central Africa

Nuba is the otiose high god of the Sara of Chad: he created the world and then withdrew from active intervention in human affairs. Shrines to him are uncommon, and people appeal instead to the lesser spirits, the besigi and badigi. When missionaries arrived in southern Chad they often used the local name of this high god for the Christian God, which facilitated conversion and encouraged syncretism. This Sara Nuba is unrelated to the Nuba Mountains and Nuba peoples of Sudan.
