Num

deity · Russia · Central Asia

Num is the supreme sky god of the Nenets people of Siberia, the good creator of the earth and all living things and the high god of the Nenets pantheon. In Nenets dualistic cosmology he is one of two demiurges whose malevolent son Nga rules the dead below; in one myth a shaman went to Nga's realm, wed his daughter, and became the Old Man of the Earth who upholds the world.
