Nunnehi

spirit · United States · North America

The Nunnehi, meaning 'the travelers' or 'those who live anywhere,' are a race of immortal spirit people of the Cherokee, distinct from ghosts and from gods. They dwell in the mountains, forests, and stone houses of Cherokee country, are usually friendly, and sometimes showed themselves to warn of danger. During the Removal they were said to hide Cherokee families in a cave closed by a stone door.
