Nyai Roro Kidul

deity · Indonesia · Southeast Asia

Nyai Roro Kidul is the goddess-queen of the Southern Ocean in Javanese and Sundanese belief, appearing as a beautiful woman in royal green robes with a spirit retinue. She rules the waters and is said to draw those who wear green into her undersea kingdom as soldiers. Revered across Java, she is the subject of widespread taboos: hotels, beaches, and courts forbid wearing green in her presence.
