Nyamgondho Wuod Ombare is a legendary lake spirit from Luo mythology who married a poor fisherman on Lake Victoria. The fisherman (whose real name was Julu son of Ombare) pulled a hideously ugly woman from his net. She promised to make him wealthy if he would take her as his wife and never reveal where she came from. The lady of the lake worked tirelessly, and soon Nyamgondho became the richest man in the region. But wealth made him arrogant.
