Nyi Roro Kidul

monster · Indonesia · Southeast Asia

Nyi Roro Kidul is the legendary queen of the Southern Ocean of Javanese and Sundanese tradition: a beautiful, powerful spirit with long black hair, ruling the waves of the Indian Ocean south of Java. Tied to the fall of the Sunda Kingdom and later to Mataram, she appears in dreams and controls sea creatures, and is appeased with green offerings; wearing green near her waters is taboo.
