Nykur is the Icelandic water horse, a shape-shifting water spirit that lures people onto its back and drowns them. Unlike the Norwegian nøkk who uses music, the nykur appears as a beautiful dapple-grey horse with backward-facing hooves and fetlocks that trail water. It stands quietly by rivers, lakes, or the sea, inviting riders. Once mounted, the nykur gallops into the deepest water and drowns its victim.
