Obatala is the king of white cloth, the oldest of all orishas, and the sculptor of humanity. Sent by Olodumare to create the earth, Obatala descended from heaven on a golden chain carrying a snail shell of sand, a white hen, a black cat, and a palm nut. He poured sand on the primordial waters and the hen scratched it into dry land. He then molded the first humans from clay. Tricked by Eshu into drinking palm wine, he created some imperfect bodies while drunk, and Olodumare decreed that people with disabilities would be sacred and under Obatala's protection.
