Ogbanje

spirit · Nigeria · West Africa

Ogbanje (Ọgbanje) are Igbo 'spirit children' who cyclically die and are reborn into the same family, causing recurrent grief. They possess a hidden iyi-uwa stone linking them to the spirit world; destroying it ends the cycle. Linked to sickle-cell disease and SIDS in medical anthropology. Documented in Achebe's 'Things Fall Apart' and Igbo ethnography.
