Ogopogo

monster · Canada · North America

Ogopogo is the lake monster of Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, rooted in Syilx (Okanagan) oral tradition, where the being is called n̓x̌aʔx̌ʔitkʷ, the sacred water creature said to demand safe passage of travellers. The name 'Ogopogo' is a 1920s coinage, but the Syilx accounts of a serpentine lake spirit long predate the English nickname.
