Oniare
Oniare is the great horned water serpent of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), said to lurk in lakes and rivers, capsizing canoes and sending storms against the unwary. The Mohawk word onyare means 'snake,' and Onyarekowa, the great snake, was feared for its poisonous breath. It is the eternal enemy of the Thunderers, and offerings were once made to appease it.
