The supreme god of war and peace in Tahitian mythology, son of Ta'aroa (the creator god). Oro was the most powerful and revered deity in the Society Islands, particularly on Tahiti and Raiatea. He descended to earth on a rainbow and took a mortal woman as his wife, establishing the Arioi society - a secret religious order of warriors, artists, and priests who spread his cult. The Arioi traveled between islands performing sacred dances, chants, and dramatic performances.
