Otso

spirit · Finland · Nordic

Otso ('The Bear', 'Honey-Paw') is the sacred bear spirit, king of the Finnish forest. Divine embodiment of bear, walking upright as man in powerful form. Honored through elaborate peijaiset (bear ceremony): hunters apologized, feasted skull, returned bones to forest. Dozens of euphemisms (otso, mesikämmen, kontio) avoided true name (karhu) to prevent summoning.
