Owl Ancestor-Spirit of Navajo

ancestor-spirit · United States · North America

The Navajo regard the owl as a being of the spirit world tied to death: its hoot is an omen, a dream of an owl foretells death, and owls are linked to witches and to the dead. The most fearsome were 'Those That Kill With Their Eyes' (Binaa' yee aghaanii), monsters slain by the Hero Twins. No guardian ancestor-spirit owl is recorded.
