Owl Animal-Spirit of Haida

animal-spirit · Canada · North America

The owl holds a place in Haida oral tradition as a crest and spirit being. In the Haida story of Kwel-Kwel the girl married the owl and their children founded the Owl crest; elsewhere the owl appears as a messenger whose cry is an omen, and shamans' familiar spirits could take owl form. It is a spirit animal rather than a forest guardian.
