Owl Ghost of Maya

ghost · Guatemala · Mesoamerica

In Yucatec Maya lore the owl (tunkuluchu) is death's messenger: its hooting near a home foretells a death, and it sings beside the dying. A famous legend explains this — after being humiliated at a noble's banquet, a proud bird was transformed into an owl, and it now cries out whenever someone is about to die, haunting ruins and dark places by night.
