Owl Spirit (Cheyenne)

spirit · Canada · North America

The Cheyenne recognize owls as night spirits: in their belief only the short-eared owl is a genuine bird, while the other owls are mista, spirits of the night, feared as omens. Owl feathers nonetheless carried protective power, worn by warriors to see in the dark. The same belief holds wherever Cheyenne tradition is told.
