The Pate Serpent is a legendary sea monster said to inhabit the waters around Pate Island in the Lamu Archipelago. According to tradition, the serpent was a guardian spirit placed by the sea gods to protect the ancient city of Shanga (the original Swahili settlement on Pate). The serpent was enormous, its body stretching across the channel between Pate and neighboring islands. It appeared during times of crisis, creating whirlpools swallowing enemy ships.
