Pele

deity · Hawaii · Pacific

Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, fire, lightning, and dance, who dwells in Halema'uma'u crater at Kīlauea. As both creator and destroyer, she builds new land through eruptions and consumes it again, and she is said to produce 'Pele's hair,' the fine threads of volcanic glass found near her vents. Still actively revered today, she is among the most venerated figures of Hawaiian religion.
