Pepo wa Bahari (Lord of the Sea)
Pepo wa Bahari (the Lord of the Sea) is the most powerful sea spirit in Swahili coastal mythology, ruler of the Indian Ocean depths. Unlike lesser pepo inhabiting specific reefs, Pepo wa Bahari governs all waters from the Lamu Archipelago to the Rovuma River. The spirit controls the monsoon winds driving the dhow trade, fish migrations sustaining coastal communities, and the storms that can destroy fleets. Sailors make elaborate offerings before long voyages -- pouring libations of coconut milk and throwing rice and cloth into the water. The spirit appears during great storms as a towering fig
