Perchta

goddess · Germany · Germanic

Frau Perchta (Berchta, 'the Bright One') is a winter spirit of Alpine Germanic folklore, guardian of spinning, weaving and moral order. During the Rauhnächte between Christmas and Epiphany she roams the land inspecting homes, rewarding the industrious with a small coin and punishing the lazy and disobedient, in some tales slitting their bellies and stuffing them with straw.
