Peri

spirit · Azerbaijan · Caucasus

Peri are beautiful winged spirits in Azerbaijani folklore, rooted in Persian tradition. Often benevolent but ambivalent, they live in underground kingdoms with gardens and palaces, appear as white doves or gazelles, and can be bound to a man who steals their feather garment or skin. They wage eternal war with the evil Divs and appear in tales such as 'Malikmammad' and the Kitabi-Dede Korkut.
