Phantom (Zapotec)

ghost · Mexico · Mesoamerica

The Matlazihua ('woman who ensnares') is the female phantom of Oaxaca's Zapotec towns: a beautiful woman in a white dress with long loose hair who appears between one and three in the morning near rivers and empty streets. She lures drunken or lovelorn men into a trance and leads them into thorny thickets and ravines; some versions give her one foot, goat hooves, or a skeletal face.
