Phi Pop

ghost · Thailand · Southeast Asia

Phi Pop (ผีปอบ) is a feared Thai and Lao spirit said to possess people and consume their innards, causing wasting illness and death; it is believed to inhabit a living person and to leave the body at night to feed. Widely discussed in Isan and northern Thailand, it is diagnosed by local healers and expelled through ritual. Anthropologist Ian G. Baird documented the belief among Lao communities.
