Poludnitsa

ghost · Russia · Slavic

Poludnitsa (Lady Midday) is a Slavic noon-wraith who appears in fields at midday during harvest. She takes the form of a young woman in white, an old hag, or a girl, carrying a scythe or shears. She stops workers to ask difficult questions; failure to answer brings heatstroke, madness, or death. She personifies sunstroke and enforces the taboo against working at high noon.
