A race of hostile, man-eating fairy beings who live under the sea in Maori mythology. The Ponaturi are described as creatures who dwell in a submerged realm, rising to the land at night. They hate sunlight, which is fatal to them. In the stories of Tawhaki and Rata, the Ponaturi are the enemies of humanity who killed Hema, Tawhaki's father.
