The pontianak (kuntilanak in Indonesia) is a vampiric female ghost of a woman who died during pregnancy or childbirth: she appears as a beautiful woman who lures men, revealing her true nature—long claws and a hole in her back—when her disguise fails. She haunts banana trees, swamps, and empty houses, and her cry can reveal her distance. The figure warns of childbirth dangers and mistreated women.
