Popa Medaw (Mother of Mount Popa)
Popa Medaw (Burmese: ပုပ္ပားမယ်တော်, 'Royal Mother of Popa') is the most important female nat in the Burmese pantheon, the mother of all nats who presides over Mount Popa, an extinct volcano in central Myanmar. According to legend, she was the sister of the blacksmith Nga Tin De (who became the Mahagiri Nat). When King Thinligyawng of Tagaung burned her brother alive in a champaca tree out of fear, she threw herself into the flames to die beside him. Their spirits became trapped in the tree until King Anawrahta had the tree cut down and the spirits carved into statues. Popa Medaw was enshrined
