Popa Nat (Guardian of Mount Popa)
Mount Popa, the extinct volcano of central Myanmar, is the holiest shrine of the Burmese nat religion, home of the 37 nats under their queen Popa Medaw (the Golden Mother) and her brother the Mahagiri nat, sibling martyrs burned in a champaca tree. Pilgrims climb 777 steps to the Taung Kalat shrine bearing flowers, coconuts and costumes, and nat mediums channel the spirits at festivals.
