Preta
Pretas (Sanskrit: प्रेत, 'departed') are hungry ghosts in Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Taoist cosmology — beings reborn in insatiable hunger due to past greed. They have enormous bellies and needle-thin throats. In Hinduism they consist of air and ether; in Buddhism they occupy the Preta Realm among the Six Paths. Families perform śrāddha rites with rice balls for a year to guide them.
