Pulotu is the Tongan spirit underworld, the realm of the dead and home to the gods. Ruled by Hikule'o, Pulotu is an underwater paradise located to the west beneath the ocean. It is described as a beautiful, bountiful land where spirits of chiefs and nobles go after death, while commoners' souls are believed to be eaten by the goddess of death. Pulotu is also the home of the god Saveasi'uleo (Nafanua's father) and the origin place of many important cultural elements including kava, the chiefly system, and various arts.
