Rübezahl

giant · Germany · Germanic

Rübezahl, mountain giant of the Giant Mountains (Riesengebirge/Krkonoše), rules weather, mines, and beasts. First recorded by Praetorius (1662), popularised by Musäus (1783). He appears as monk, giant, or gnome, rewarding the virtuous and punishing mockery. Name from Rübe (turnip) and zählen (count)—a princess tasked him with counting turnips while she fled.
