Rannamaari
Rannamaari is the powerful sea demon of Maldivian mythology — monstrous entity embodying the dangerous ocean surrounding the atolls. In the founding myth, it demanded a virgin sacrifice monthly until the Moroccan scholar Abu al-Barakat Yusuf al-Barbari defeated it by reciting Quran, converting the islands to Islam. Represents pre-Islamic Maldivian fear of the sea.
