Ratovantany is the earth creator god in Malagasy mythology who shaped the physical bodies of all living beings from clay. He worked in partnership with Zanahary, the sky god: Ratovantany molded the forms, but they remained lifeless until Zanahary breathed souls into them. Upon death, the body returns to Ratovantany while the soul ascends to Zanahary. Ratovantany is also credited with shaping the landscape of Madagascar, carving the mountains, valleys and rivers.
